• At one point, on one colony world, there was a catastrophe/cataclysm of some sort, and the Ancients tried to create a time-travel device to circumvent it. They failed; it caused a short-term continuous loop. In the end, they gave up, shut it down, and let the end come. They left behind the equivalent of 400 pages of text on the walls surrounding an altar near the stargate, including a planetary history and description of the device. • Ideology is Tollan-like: they refuse to give less-advanced races any help for fear that the help (technology, knowledge) might be misused; better that a younger race be wiped out or enslaved than that happen. (Ascension)
• Those among their own kind who break the rules against helping less-advanced races, either by giving them tech or moving them along the path to the next plane of existence (their most sacred rule; specifically: "Do not accelerate the ascension of those beneath") are banished.     • Eventually Kheb became a religious byword among the Jaffa; the Goa'uld were terrified of it (Oma didn't suffer Goa'uld gladly) and forbade any mention, but in secret Jaffa whispered of how a dying Jaffa could go to Kheb and find peace. (Maternal Instinct)
  • Amaunet, knowing no Goa'uld would think to look there, hid the harsesis child (Shifu) on Kheb, and Oma took over his care. When SG-1 and Apophis found out and each moved in to take the child, Oma wiped out several thousand Jaffa and took the baby through the stargate, abandoning Kheb. (Maternal Instinct)
  • She accelerated Shifu's physical development through nanites, and unlocked strong mental powers as well as she taught him her ways. (Absolute Power)
  • She also took it upon herself to begin teaching Daniel when she first met him, knowing that he was open-minded enough to listen to what she had to say.

    • She also presented a very real illusion (including a working stargate, which had to be real to be functional) of an intact Abydos long enough for SG-1 to visit and be assured by Skaara that the Abydonians were all ascended, and happy, and were moving on. (nb: it's my assumption that this was illusion, since I doubt she recreated the actual temple; my guess is that she unburied the stargate briefly, created the illusion around it, then reburied it after SG-1 left, when the stargate was supposed to be no longer available, according to the ascended Skaara.)   • It's entirely unclear exactly what Oma's agenda is -- the only clear thing is that she won't allow anyone to interfere with it, for any reason. (Maternal Instinct, Absolute Power, Meridian, Abyss, Full Circle)
• Orlin: A rogue who gave advanced weaponry to the people of Velona to save them, only to watch as they later tried to conquer all of their neighbors. The rest of his kind wiped them out. He was banished to remain on that world, alone, where he stayed for hundreds of years until SG-1 arrived. He fell for Sam as she was trying to figure out the tech left behind on the planet, and attempted to "share" with her (telepathic/empathic type of thing, a "sharing of spirit" rather than directly reading thoughts). When all he managed to do was knock her out, he followed her home, literally, and stalked her in the comfort of her own home, eventually giving up his ascendant status and becoming human to have a better chance with her. He created a perfect, huge emerald for her, then wound up building a baby stargate in her basement, escaping through it right before the military broke in to kill him. He went straight to Velona to stop the activation of the weapon he'd originally told the Velonans how to build. He gets shot but stops the activation, and as a reward his people help him to re-ascend. (Ascension)

"Adopted" Ascendants:

• Daniel Jackson:
  • Daniel was originally human, and a founding member of the SGC and SG-1.
  • Oma Desala began teaching him the path to ascension when he was looking for Shifu -- the harsesis child of Sha're's body -- who was being raised by Oma. She started him on his path in Maternal Instinct, making him start thinking about what he was doing and why. A year later, a rapidly-aged pre-teen Shifu sent him into a dream to continue his lessons, about power and choices. (Absolute Power)
  • After Daniel was lethally irradiated while saving millions of lives, Oma appeared to him again, giving him the chance to complete his path to ascension. After some fairly brutal (and unfair to himself) soul-searching, he chose to ascend rather than die, believing that he could continue to do more to help people that way. (Meridian)
  • He seemed to be keeping an eye on things back at the SGC after his ascension, and worked his way around the rules (sorta) to help where he could:
    • He knew what was going on with Jack, and knew where to find him when Jack was being tortured by Baal. Despite technically not being allowed to interfere, Daniel went to Jack to keep him company, and while he wouldn't help Jack escape, he did offer to help him ascend. When Jack refused, it's highly likely (given the timing of events) that Daniel went back to the SGC long enough to nudge Teal'c in the right direction to mount a rescue. (Abyss)
    • He worked his way into Teal'c's hallucinations when Teal'c was delirious from sharing Junior with Bra'tac for several days, giving Teal'c the encouragement to stick it out until help could arrive.
  • He watched over other things, as well -- when Anubis had collected five of the six Eyes of power and was headed for Abydos to collect the sixth, Daniel appeared to Skaara (and a few others) to give them hope, then went to the SGC to recruit Jack (risking appearing to him in an elevator [which Daniel stopped] on the base) and thus the rest of SG-1. He felt obligated not to jeopardize Oma's precarious standing with the Others, so continued to refuse to act directly to influence human existence -- i.e., help in the search for the Eye or the fight against Anubis.     • This lasted until Jack lost patience with him as Anubis attacked Abydos, and insisted he cross that very fine line; at that point, Daniel started helping them to look for the Eye of Ra, and from there kept getting more involved until he finally took on Anubis directly. (Full Circle)
    • Got something of a surprise when, looking for the Eye of Ra with Sam and Jonas, he found a tablet, written in the oldest dialect of the Ancients, explaining that the Ascendants are actually the Ancients (evolved of a race of humans who lived long before us, and who were being wiped out by a plague; some learned to ascend, the rest died out). The tablet went on to talk about a lost city that Daniel believed to be incredibly important. (Full Circle)
    • Finding out about the city seemed to spark a plan (in which he threw all "don't interfere" rules to the wind without a blink):
      • He warned the System Lords about the Eye of Ra and what it can do, and that Anubis was close to retrieving it. As a result, Yu rallied the System Lords behind him and brought a fleet of motherships to surround Anubis' ship to demand the Eye. (Full Circle)
      • He made a deal with Anubis, promising to deliver the Eye of Ra in return for a promise that Anubis would never harm the people of Abydos. (Full Circle)
      • He hoped that that Anubis and the System Lords would battle it out for the Eye and destroy each other, but even if they weren't wiped out, he figured it would buy the SGC enough time to find the lost city and the cache of Ancient weapons and technology stored there, giving them a huge advantage over Anubis.       • He was adamant that Jack and SG-1 had to escape Abydos with the tablet; if it fell into Anubis' hands and he found the lost city first, it would be all over. (Full Circle)
      • He promised Jack that nothing would happend to the Abydonians, even if it meant he had to kick Anubis' ass. (Full Circle)
      • He never got the chance; when he faced Anubis down after the System Lords retreated in defeat, Oma interfered, driving him off (to parts/fate unknown) and leaving Anubis free to strike at Abydos. (Full Circle)

• Shifu:
  • Shifu was originally human -- sort of. He was the harsesis child of two Goa'uld, Apophis and Amaunet. (Secrets)
  • He contained all the genetic knowledge of both his Goa'uld parents, and was considered a dangerous abomination by the Goa'uld. Apophis wanted him to use as a host body when the child grew up enough. Sha're was in control during his birth, with Daniel in attendance. Daniel stole the child, and although Amaunet probably knew exactly what had happened, she didn't give him up to Apophis. (Secrets)
  • Instead, she kidnapped the child several months later, and had him sent to Kheb, where she could hide him from Apophis for her own purposes. Oma Desala rescued him from the Jaffa he was with, and took him into her own care. She fled the planet with him to an undisclosed location. (Maternal Instinct)
  • She used nanite technology to accelerate his growth -- in a year's time, he grew into about a 12-year-old boy. He was also clearly at least partially ascended; although he had a physical self, he was capable of turning into pure energy as well. After visiting with Daniel long enough to impart some wisdom about power and knowledge and evil, Shifu left again, to continue on his own path, presumably still being taught by Oma. Or not. • Skaara:
  • Oma Desala ascended him during the battle on Abydos against Anubis' forces -- he was the first of the Abydonians to be ascended. His entire people followed shortly after, as Oma refused to allow Daniel to interefere with Anubis to save them, but interfered herself by ascending them all, for reasons unknown.
  • He stuck around in ascended form long enough to reassure Jack and the rest of SG-1 that he and the rest of his people were fine -- death for them had become the next step on the journey.
  • He told Jack that Jack wouldn't see him again, "at least not for a while".

An alien race that took on the guise of Norse gods to rescue some humans from the Goa'uld, and who have been keeping an eye on Earth and humans for a very long time. In their true form, they're Roswell Grays. They were once part of a great alliance of four ancient races.

• Appeared to humans as the Norse gods, and brought a group of humans to a safe world, Cimmeria, to allow them to evolve w/o interference from the Goa'uld, under Thor's protection. When Daniel and Sam solved the riddle proving they were advanced enough to know the truth, Thor appeared to them from his ship the Biliskner in his true form: a Roswell Gray. He said he was the Supreme Commander of the Asgard Fleet. (Thor's Chariot)
• A race of effective immortals, with everyone's consciousness being repeatedly placed into younger versions of themselves as their old bodies wear out. (Revelations)
• 30,000 years ago, a ship was launched from the Asgard homeworld, its crew in suspended animation. The ship was lost, and sometime in 2001, the Asgard discovered it floating in the Tau'ri/Goa'uld galaxy, with one crewmember still perfectly preserved. (Revelations)
• The Asgard speak many languages, and have been studying humans very closely for a long time. (The Fifth Race)

Chekhov, and the ambassadors-to-the-US of France, the United Kingdom, and China. He informed the ambassadors that while the Asgard would deal with whoever was in charge of the stargate, it was "preferred" that it remain under Hammond's control. (Disclosure)
  • The Protected Planets Treaty is a treaty with the Goa'uld, and worlds under Asgard protection can't be invaded by the Goa'uld. But they're largely bluffing about enforcing it; they're caught up in a war against a far more powerful enemy in their own galaxy, and much though they'd like to protect people in our galaxy from the Goa'uld, they can't devote much in the way of resources to do so.   • The Asgard have several planets under their protection:
    • Cimmeria: The High Council of Asgard designated Cimmeria a safe world for developing sentient species by unanimous decree, era 40.73.29. (Thor's Hammer)
    • Earth: included in the Protected Planets Treaty to keep us from being wiped out by Goa'uld invasion, although the protection doesn't extend to anyone travelling offworld. (Fair Game)
      • The Asgard monitor all hyperspace activity near Earth, and are capable of tracking ships through hyperspace. (Prometheus)
    • PX3-595: is an Asgard-rotected planet. The natives, known as Tiernods, are primitive, and hide from predators in caves, using an Asgard device to vanish. (Shades of Grey)
    • K'tau: (a part of the Protected Planets Treaty) the Asgard "contact" is Freyr, whom the natives worship as the god of sun and rain. (Red Sky)
    • Adara: no apparent life on the planet, given the unlivable conditions (atmosphere of 80% carbon dioxide, and an average surface temperature above 400 degrees Farenheit). The Asgard chose this planet to house Heimdall's vital research lab. (Revelations)
• War with the Replicators
  • The Replicators are the enemy that is more dangerous than the Goa'uld. They were discovered on an isolated planet and brought aboard an Asgard ship for study. They infested the ship, feeding off the metals. They used the metals/alloys to replicate, increasing their numbers incredibly fast and becoming a plague on the galaxy. They have an extremely high learning ability, and are capable of functioning both independently and as a group with a single purpose. (Nemesis)
  • When the SGC finds the original creator of the Replicators, Reese, and tries to get word to the Asgard, the Asgard don't reply -- they've possibly finally been overrun by the Replicators. (The Menace)
  • The war with the Replicators finally reached a critical state, occupying the Asgard to the point where they couldn't respond to SGC requests for contact (Menace, Meridian). They also had almost no ships to spare to handle situations in Earth's galaxy; Thor was dispatched in the only available ship to handle a Goa'uld problem, and when his ship was destroyed in the battle, it left the Asgard with none to spare. Freyr came directly to Earth when he could to ask for Reese, in hopes that the Asgard could figure out a way to defeat the Replicators. (Revelations)
    • It seems to have helped; after they took possession of her, they finally managed to gain the upper hand in the war, to the point where they could spare three ships to help SG-1 rescue Heimdall (just in time to keep Anubis from capturing or destroying the cargo ship they were escaping on). (Revelations)
  • When the Asgard High Council realized the war against the Replicators was unwinnable, they came up with another plan. They used the android Reese, the original creator of the Replicators, to bait a trap. She was too badly damaged to repair, but her base programming retained a single core command: "come forth". (Unnatural Selection)
    • They triggered it in her neural network, amplified it, and broadcast it through subspace throughout the known universe to call all the Replicators to the Asgard homeworld. (Unnatural Selection)
    • The trap itself was a time-dilation device, generating a field that extended 0.16 lightyears (approx. 940 billion miles). Within the "bubble", time was supposed to have been slowed by a factor of 10 to the fourth power (e.g., one year within the bubble would be 10,000 years outside it). (Unnatural Selection)
      • It was constructed in an ancient building on Hala, encased in a solid neutronium shell, and set with a time delay long enough to evacuate the entire civilization. (Unnatural Selection)
      • Not all the Asgard escaped; there was a great battle. (Unnatural Selection)
      • Replicators got to the device before it activated. (Unnatural Selection)
      • The evacuation fleet retreated to the void between the Asgard galaxy and our own to await word on whether SG-1 would help them activate the device. (Unnatural Selection)
    • When they realized their trap had failed, they called in SG-1, in the X-303, to fix it. Thor and the Asgard fleet held back to keep from triggering a Replicator attack, and then after the trap had been triggered properly, they searched to make sure no Replicator vessels escaped. Known Asgard:

• Freyr: Apparent head of the Asgard High Council -- at the council, he wears a jewel around his neck, is in a chair bathed in purple light, and does most of the talking. He knows who Jack is, but isn't as personally invested in him as Thor is. He's the personal protector of K'tau.
  • Finally made a trip to Earth to ask for the SGC's help, after Thor was presumed dead after a Goa'uld attack on his vessel in a protected system. The battle left an Asgard scientist, Heimdall, stranded in a research facility on the planet, and Freyr needed SG-1 to go get him out. The Asgard had no ships available to do it themselves, because of the war with the Replicators. Thanks to the information they got from Reese after the SGC handed her over, the Asgard were in good enough shape that Freyr in turn could dash off to the rescue of SG-1, Heimdall, and Thor, all in danger of capture or destruction by Anubis. (Revelations)
• Heimdall: Scientist working alone in the Adara system for six months in 2001, on the Asgards' most important project. Doesn't appear to have met any humans before, and was pleased to see SG-1; he's heard of them and their "exploits on behalf of the Asgard". He was working on the genetic history of the Asgard, and both he and Thor were very concerned that his research not fall into Goa'uld hands: the Asgard need the knowledge to ensure the existence of their race.   • He was using the perfectly preserved body of an Asgard from 30,000 years ago, found on a ship that was drifting in space, to try to find ways to reverse the genetic manipulation that had locked the Asgard onto a dying path -- their inability to sexually reproduce and lack of genetic diversity are going to kill them off as a race eventually if nothing is done. (Revelations)
  • He was willing to die (and to watch SG-1 die) to keep the research from falling into Goa'uld hands. (Revelations)
• Thor: High Commander of the Asgard fleet. Thrudvang is Thor's home in the stars. (Thor's Hammer) He has the people of Cimmeria under his personal protection (Thor's Hammer, Thor's Chariot), and seems to have quite the soft spot for Earth, as well -- or at least for Jack O'Neill.
  • Age: at least a thousand years old. The Asgard are all clones of themselves, and for a thousand years, each time a body has begun to wear out, the consciousness has been transferred into a younger version of it. (Revelations)
  • Repeatedly taps Jack, specifically, for important missions. (Shades of Grey, Nemesis)
  • Named his car -- er, brand-new, most-advanced-ever ship after him (The O'Neill, in Small Victories).
  • Arrived in the protected Adara system after a Goa'uld ship showed up there, and ordered it to withdraw. Osiris, in command of the ha'tak, refused, and Thor opened fire -- only to have the ha'tak's new shields hold against his attack.Osiris returned fire, with weapons that were also more advanced than the Asgard had expected, and destroyed Thor's ship, taking Thor prisoner but letting the Asgard think he was dead.   • While Thor was imprisoned, Anubis arrived and implanted a device in Thor's brain, linking his mind with the ship's computer to download all Thor's knowledge. (Revelations)
    • Thor took advantage of this to use the ship's internal communications to talk to the captured Jack (and Teal'c), and to help them escape from their holding cell. (Revelations)
    • After he was rescued the Asgard managed to remove the device, but it was too late: Thor had lapsed into a coma. (Revelations)
    • After he was captured by Anubis and hooked up to Anubis' ship's computer, Thor let his consciousness take up residence in the computer. He basically took over the ship, and halted the self-destruct that Anubis started in order to destroy him, then aimed the ship for Earth. After Sam figured that out, she put his consciousness into a single small bank of crystals and removed it, to bring it to the Asgard to be downloaded into a new clone body. (Descent)
  • Safely in his new (identical) body, he traced the X-303 after it left Earth's orbit so he could request Jack's help against the Replicators -- which have overrun the Asgard homeworld. (Prometheus)

Usually the effect is clearly holographic -- the image is a bit washed out, as well as being slightly flickery -- but when Jack and Sam use the tech to communicate between Heimdall's research base and people on Osiris' mothership in orbit, the image is perfectly clear except for an occasional rolling flicker and appears solid, as though the person is actually there.   • The Biliskner, Thor's Asgard ship, is powered by four neutrino ion generators. It uses a molecular transportation device which was disabled in one direction to prevent escape, and was destroyed on entering Earth's atmosphere. (Nemesis)
  • The O'Neill was the first ship designed solely to fight the Replicators. It had a hull of carbon, trinium, and naquadah, and was the most advanced technological creation of the Asgard. Sam blew it up. (Small Victories)
• Time-dilation device, capable of generating a bubble-field that extendes approx. 0.16 lightyear. (Unnatural Selection)
• Kickass transporters on their ships; the ship can't be between the transporter and the object, but they can transport people/things into or out of inside buildings or whatever. (first show up in Thor's Chariot; limitations appear in Nemesis)

• Possibly the first of their buildings to be found (not confirmed that it's Furling) was on a planet that the SGC discovered through Maybourne. The building contained what appeared to be Furling writings and technology that Sam had never seen before, and was a portal to another world (called by the SGC a moon, but it appeared far too large to be a moon; it looked like a binary planet instead) designed to be a paradise. The portal/doorway required a key and a combination to function. (Paradise Lost)
  • The portal filtered out a zat, but not Jack's projectile weapons or knife. (Paradise Lost)
  • If the building and key really were Furling, then, according to Maybourne, some of the Furlings chucked it all a long time ago and retreated to a place where they created a small, isolated utopian community. They sent out represenatives to meet and evaluate people from all over the galaxy, and invited them to join them; the key and scroll that Maybourne found/translated were the invitation sent to Earth (unclear who on Earth was being invited -- humans, Goa'uld [unlikely], others?)   • A greeting party was supposed to appear to welcome anyone who came through the portal. (Paradise Lost)

• Possibly, transport devices that also functioned as weapons-screeners; when Maybourne and Jack went through a transportation device, it moved them to another world/moon and deactivated their "advanced" weaponry -- Jack's zat. An ancient race that has chosen (relative) isolation; they don't take sides in the current galactic conflicts, preferring the ways of peace. Their lives seem primitive, but it's by choice, not necessity. They defend themselves through illusion (of invisibility). Planet: P3X-774

General info

• The Nox are pacifists, not taking sides in the conflict between the Goa'uld and anyone else. They won't help the Goa'uld, but they won't hinder them, either.
• After SG-1 visited their world and brought the Goa'ulds' attention to bear, the Nox said they were going to bury the stargate, making return impossible.
• The Ritual of Life is a ceremony in which the dead can be revived. During the ceremony, the Nox are unable to maintain invisibility.

 

Known Nox:

• Lya: Nox woman, probably the wife (or equivalent) of Anteaus and mother of Nafrayu. (The Nox) She was the Nox who came through the stargate (and the iris) to bring the Tollans to safety after Daniel and Narim contacted them. (Enigma) She was also the Nox who went to Tollana to participate in Skaara and Klorel's triad, to see who had the right to use Skaara's body. Lya was the impartial archon, with the deciding vote (she voted in favor of Skaara). (Pretense)
• Anteaus: Nox man, probably the husband (or equivalent) of Lya and father of Nafrayu. (The Nox)
• Opher: The oldest of the Nox (432 years old). Part of the family unit that includes Lya, Anteaus, and Nafrayu. (The Nox)
• Nafrayu: a Nox boy, very inquisitive and friendly. He was attacked and badly hurt, probably killed, by Apophis when he went to greet the Goa'uld, and revived with the Ritual of Life. (The Nox)

• Ohper, among the oldest of the Nox, is 432 years old.

• The Nox possess a level of technology far above that of both Earth and the Goa'uld, including the ability to control molecular structure at will, creating the effect of invisibility. (The Nox, Pretense).
• Ability to dial stargate without using a DHD or computer, and without causing the kawoosh.
