Why you should read this

Two characters I would honestly never think of having an introspective moment together are Skywise and Shenshen, but that's exactly what romanticalgirl pulls off here, in a lovely scene between them set soon after Cutter and Leetah became lifemates. I was charmed by the sweetness and sorrow and love of it all, overlaid with the natural flirtiness of them both.

Author's summary

When they hunt the bear, what Strongbow seeks isn't precisely what Bearclaw seeks.

Why you should read this

Bearclaw/Strongbow isn't a pairing I'd really considered before, and now I'm wondering why not. This is a spot-on look at a younger Strongbow, chafing just a little under Bearclaw's actions and reactions during a bear hunt, wanting to prove his place in the tribe. The connection between them feels exactly right for who they are, and the reactions of both Joyleaf and Moonshade to their head-butting were absolutely perfect. Lovely work.

Why you should read this

The notion of fanfic these books had never even occurred to me until I saw this story. The language, the tone, the depth added by the use of canonical detail and background, and above all, the relationship, were all so perfect that I just sigh happily over it every time I read it.

Why you should read this

Wow. There's nothing about this that I don't love - the concept, the narrative voice, the details, everything here is perfect. The narrative is light and wry, with a briskly pragmatic tone that works amazingly well for a story about magic, and for this particular Beauty. Lyrstzha has managed to make this tale completely her own.

Why you should read this

This isn't a crossover I would ever have considered, or believed possible, but I really like the way she handled it. She captured both Jack and Crichton for me, giving me a backstory on Jack I could buy and a glimpse into Crichton mid-Farscape, and I was happy to susped my disbelief to go along with her premise. I hesitate to say more for fear of spoiling the story, but if you like Jack Harkness and John Crichton, give this one a shot.

Turn your back and off they go.

Why you should read this

The three-way relationship between Aaron, Darvish, and Chandra is a tough one to pull off, because of the way it's set up in the book -- but the way it's set up is what makes it so appealing to begin with. Here, cmshaw succeeds wonderfully, bringing off a sweet, hot, funny look at the three of them after they travel to Chandra's father's keep that rings very true to canon. The bonds between them are exactly right, with Aaron and Darvish still new to each other and delighting in discovery, but completely comfortable at the same time, and Chandra true to herself and her chosen path even as she delights in her dearest friends' delight.

And did I mention the hot?

Why you should read this

This picks up a while after the end of the book, with Aaron, Darvish, and Chandra settled into their relationship but knowing it has to change soon, and politics still happening all around them. It feels like the book, and is a wonderful epilogue -- or, really, next chapter. She's nailed the characters and the universe and has moved everyone forward just enough. And the picture show itself is a wonder.

Why you should read this

Wow -- this is a perfect, brilliant look at Janette, with all her many facets, and her clear-eyed awareness of... everything. Her life, her relationships with Nick and LaCroix, their relationship with each other; because of that awareness, tolakasa paints a perfect first-season look at Nick and LaCroix through her eyes, as well. I can't believe how much the author packed into such a short story, without any rough spots anywhere. Read this if you like Forever Knight.

(Note: This may be a summary written by someone other than the author -- the archive allowed for that.)

Why you should read this

It's been a very long time since I've read any FK fiction, but I remember Dorian. Susan wrote a series of incredibly long, complex, well-plotted stories that include her original character, whom she fleshed out well enough that he's been in my head as an actual FK character ever since. If you like the Forever Knight characters and universe, and you're looking for a good, long read, give this a try.

One thing to bear in mind: this was written/posted in 1994, before second season aired.

Men and cities are made of clay, and turn to dust.

Why you should read this

There's an ethereal quality here, amidst the clay and dust and death in this, that I really like. The language is modern, but the rhythm is more timeless; it really works well. It's not a happy story, although it has happy moments, but the bittersweetness of this is perfectly suited to a king looking back on his life, and his lost love.

Why you should read this

Set immediately post-movie, still at the camp, this is a fabulous character study of Hilts. Hafital captures the emotional feel beautifully, both in Hilts's head and throughout the camp, as everyone deals with the losses of the escape and tries to regroup. These men are all haunted. I can totally see this as the epilogue we never got.

Author's summary

Peter goes to college, and becomes closer to Nathan.

Why you should read this

I keep thinking I don't need to read fanfic for Heroes, and then I come across something like this. Linaerys does something really interesting here that I liked a lot, with the premise that Nathan and Peter weren't especially close as children, but that they grow steadily closer as adults, in their own slightly fumbling way. She works canon events in smoothly to build their background, and her characterizations felt very real to me throughout. She stays tightly in Peter's POV, with the rather lovely result that the reader understands what's going on with Nathan better than Peter does, because Peter doesn't have the same context for what he's seeing.

Why you should read this

Hackthis sums up Nathan and Peter's characters and relationship just about perfectly for me in this: Peter's need to save everyone and desire for Nathan's approval and attention, Nathan's worries about his image and his need to protect Peter. So when Peter gets into trouble trying to help a stranger, Nathan's the one who's there to help him. Lovely characterizations, and h/c that's all the more poignant for how restrained Nathan usually is, and how much he can't help but offer comfort to Peter.

Why you should read this

This is not light and fluffy. It's a dark and horrific and seriously good AU, with humor and sexiness that just makes the darkness that much more intense and shivery. It branches off from canon after .07%, with a darkside Nathan and Peter that are scarily in character. It's fabulous.

A kinda creepy, chilling, heartwarming standalone. (Look, they really do love each other, okay? I can't help it.) Why you should read this

I love stories about Arthur and Ford on Earth pre-series as much as I love stories about them traveling around in space. I'm not sure I can beat that summary. Milkshake Butterfly says this started out as a PWP, and it's easy to see how - but what keeps it from being one isn't the length, but the care she puts into showing their relationship. Why you should read this

This kept me engaged all the way through it -- it's 225k on the archive -- doing a lovely job of showing how central their friendship is to both their lives, starting from when they first meet. The dialogue is spot on, and she weaves their relationship into the rest of their lives, including both their outside relationships and the hospital and everyone who works there, both canonical characters and well-drawn OCs. The story's structure wobbles a tiny bit in places, and I would have been happier with a POV that shifted either more or less than it did, but neither of those things was enough to make me give up, and the story overall was definitely worth it.

This has all the basics down cold: voices, characterization, clean powerful writing, you name it. Beyond that, it takes some of my favorite slash tropes -- unrequited longing, cluelessness, a man who considers himself straight dealing with his best friend's attraction -- and spins them into a wonderful story full of devotion and selfishness and panic and courage and desperation and joy. But it's the devotion that hits me hardest, even at its most selfish, because in the end, House loves Wilson so much he'll do anything for him, anything to keep him near, anything to make him happy.
