Why you should watch this
Okay, first of all: canonical use of ass-lasers. Also, the vid is poignant enough that you will be misty-eyed in spots. Despite the ass-lasers, which will have you cracking up. Seriously, how can you not watch a vid with that much range?
Which sounds a little flip, but really -- this vid has range, and depth, and it's not something I'd ever expect to see for Astro Boy. Walter uses all three versions (1960s, 1980s, and the 2003 remake) to fabulous effect, and also brings in an external source for one shot that makes me so happy I can't even tell you. It's perfect. Even if you don't know any of the animes, you should give this one a shot; it's hopeful, and cheerful, and heroic, and poignant, and uplifting, and just all-around wonderful.

Sometimes the dead girls come back.
Why you should watch this
Babylon 5 was full of women who made a difference to the people in their lives, and this vid touches on almost all of them. It's bittersweet, with delight bleeding into grief and loss, so gently and yet irrevocably.
When I first watched this on the VVC 2006 DVDs, I could barely hear the lyrics at all -- mostly all I heard were the repeated "Ophelia"s. The vid didn't work for me as well at that point, because I had some issues with who was Ophelia in a few places. Fascinatingly, though, those places made me intensely thinky about the show (and other shows), and about gender roles, and gendered roles, and all sorts of cool things, which in an odd way made it all better, and convinced me to rec it.
Then I downloaded it to doublecheck on the computer, and the audio is ten times better, so now it all makes more sense to me. But it still makes me thinky. Which is still really cool. You should watch it.

Ruminations of a lifelong military man. Adama study with some Lee. Spoilers through 4x01.
Why you should watch this
Oh, I like this. The song is a bit OTT, but in a way that works here -- it's driving, angry, and regretful, all at once, and fits Adama beautifully. The military made Adama what he is, for good or ill, and he knows it. One of the things I love best about this -- beyond the way it frames Adama's relatinonship with Lee -- is the sense that the destruction of the Colonies and the flight of the Fleet really is just one more aspect of his military life. No matter how intensely horrifying it is to have lost their homeworlds, Adama literally soldiers on in the face of whatever is thrown his way.

Why you should watch this
The more I watch this, the more I get out of it, and the more I like it. It's the show through the lens of Lee, who only wants to do the right thing -- protect humanity, love his family and friends, be a good man -- but who is having to deal with a reality that thwarts him in that goal more and more, both in terms of his crumbling relationships and the universe at large that he lives in.
I confess, I tend to think of BSG in terms of the women, so a vid that was all about Lee was a bit of a surprise, but once I wrapped my head around that this really took off for me.

Why you should watch this
I love the build in this, as the vid carries us through Starbuck's life -- nothing is right, and even the things that look like they're going right wind up blowing up in her face, and Starbuck gets steadily more haunted and desperate. Even her memories aren't safe -- every flashback is more pain. Things tumble more and more out of control until the end, where everything is spinning madly and Starbuck, who started the vid laughing at her joy in the controlled tumble of her viper, has literally lost her grip and is falling through space. Why you should watch this
So, not only did shalott and speranza manage to vid a song I would have though unviddable, they did so fabulously, using it perfectly to showcase Johnny's life and the insane pressures he's under most of the time. I love how the first musical build to an almost unbearable climax is the pressure of everyone around him touching him and forcing visions on him, and the second such build is both narrower and far more horrible, as he witnesses Armageddon. There are smaller touches throughout that just add to the build, including a meta reference back to the original novel, which -- wow, how do you even do that, in a vid? But they did.
Also, best use of hamster in a vid EVER.

There's a sultry joy, almost, to the violence and danger here that completely nails my sense of the show. And addiction or no, just like in the show, I'm rooting for Dexter all the way here. I loved this vid; it's Brian's arc through and through, in all its creepy fixation. I like how sweetestdrain mirrored what the show did, making him seem innocuous at first and only eventually showing the monster within, and then after that moving on to the connection with Dexter, who is the closest thing to a soft spot Brian's capable of; she set the vid up in almost perfect thirds, in a pacing that worked really well for me.
This gets everything about Brian: how good he is at passing for normal; how *utterly* fucked up he is; how very much he wants to connect with Dexter. The whole vid is a twisted love story, just as it should be. Fabulous work.

When I heard this was remastered, I think I actually squeaked. I've loved this since I first saw it a decade ago, and it still holds up. This is a real buddy slash vid, with each of them needing the other, and each of them there for the other, all the way through, in a mirrored set of storylines that mesh together perfectly. The song choice is perfect, too -- a fairly light-hearted vehicle to carry all of the emotion of the clips (and it does carry it -- it's not mismatched at all), really echoing the way the show managed to be immensely dark and intense in a lot of ways, for all that it was supposedly a fairly light-hearted comedy.
And I have to mention this: those mirrored storylines are separated by a POV shift in the middle that is so smooth and brilliant and *right*, especially for this particular vid, that I pretty much just want to marry it.

My gut reaction, every time I see this, is "whoa" -- it's fast, flowing, and beautiful, and takes full advantage of Farscape's surreality. But it's more than just a visual feast. The audio cut-ins for "Time" and all of the time-related phrases build to a final, striking phrase (matched with the visual) that helps structure the vid inside its frame. The whole thing starts with Crichton in a spacesuit literally spinning out of control as he's flung through a wormhole into the Farscape universe, and as he learns to accep the chaos and insanity around it, he slowly gains more and more control over it until he finally ends, in a space suit, creating and controlling the wormholes that had once uprooted him. This is just fantastically done.

When?
Why you should watch this
Just -- wow.
On first viewing, this is all about visual sweep -- color and speed and motion. t's breathtaking on that level, with an often-soaring (Gaelic) vocal line and planes that, well, take your breath away. They're WWI bi-planes, fighting it out in the skies, violent and graceful and staggeringly beautiful.
There are people, too -- fighter pilots, two of whom are clearly connecting very strongly -- but on that first viewing that's about as much as I knew about them.
Jill's cutting is flawless, and she's not afraid to cut incredibly quick and short if the vid calls for it, dipping in and out of scenes so fast in places you don't even consciously register what you're seeing. There was an effect for me in some places as though I was catching stuff out of the corner of my eye for a split second, which, wow.
It makes it hard to follow the story on the first couple of viewings, but it adds tremendously to the motion of the vid, making the shots on the ground of the characters swoop and stutter like the planes and guns duking it out in the air scenes. It also matched the pace of the music perfectly; it flows beautifully without being jarring at all.
The more I watched the vid, the more I got from it, until I was blown away by the storytelling as well as the visuals. It's all about love and loss and vengeance, with huge chunks of this vid happening in a matter of seconds in "real" (movie) time -- almost the entire vid is a flashback (or a rapid series of flashbacks, more accurately), framed by a few "real time" clips.
Seriously, just -- wow. Watch this one at the highest quality you can manage.

Why you should watch this
The effects in this are either going to suck you in or drive you away. Me, they sucked in. The layering and jerkiness gave the impression that we were inside Sylar's head, which worked really well for me. I couldn't see/understand a lot of the visuals, but Sylar's crazy, and I don't want to understand what goes on in his head, so it's all good. There were spots where I wished the visuals were moving faster, but overall the pacing was solid and chilling.

But it's really well-done -- well enough that I didn't bail as soon as I realized what was going on, but kept watching till the end, which is not easy for a teacher/student story to do with me -- and if that particular dynamic doesn't bother you, you'll love this.

This is a hard one for me to watch. It's about the sixth-season loss of Daniel, and I first watched it then, and watching it brings all of that back. But it's a gorgeous vid, starting with all the losses in Daniel's life, then moving on to his death and ascension, and his teammates left behind having to accept that and move on as best they can. It's beautifully done.

The perfect answer to the "Daniel the fainting flower" trope so rife in Stargate fandom. I grin like a loon all the way through this, every time. Hee!

Why you should watch this
I was absolutely blown away the first time I saw this, thinking "yes, that's it! That's Jack/Daniel, that's SG-1!" I've been hoping for years that it would make it online at some point, and I'm incredibly happy I can finally point people at it. It's the early years of their relationship, when everything was just a little brighter.

Why you should watch this
Hee! Really, Jack Harkness fits "you're so damn hot" better than pretty much anyone -- and he knows it. This is hot, and adorable, and fun, and if you didn't have a thing for Jack before you watch it, you will when you're done.

Why you should watch this
Oh, I like this -- Gwen's slow slide into getting what she wants and finding out that you really should be careful what you wish for, and how much she really loved what she had before. I love how it's not just her life she's slowly destroying by going after what she wants; Rhys's happy life is slowly ripped apart, as well.
The whole thing is a fabulous summation of her season-one arc.

Sonny/Vinnie! This is a fantastic, fast-paced look at them, starting (and ending) with how they end, and filling in everything that leads up to that ending in the middle. These two sizzled together onscreen, and Destina and Barkley nail that here - the vid crackles with the energy of Sonny and Vinnie's connection. I love this vid.

This video focuses on the sensual aspects of the show Xena and the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle. This was made originally in Oct 04 for a theme challenge and the theme was "lust". This vid plays heavily on the lust, the swaying bodies and the subtext text.
Why you should watch this
*points to Charmax's summary/info*. This is the most sensual vid I think I've ever seen -- color, motion, emotion, it all adds up to intense sensuality and blazing heat. Everything in the vid is flowing and fluid, with a deliberateness to every motion that amps up the sensuality tremendously. It's unbelievably good.

Why you should watch this
I'm still blown away by this vid, ten or so years after first seeing it. The summary is exactly right -- this is the Consortium theme song, and it's vidded from the Consortium's POV. It's a fantastic look at their actions through their own eyes, and how completely moral and correct they believe themselves to be. Just, seriously, go watch this if you've never seen it.

Oh, wow. This vid suffered a bit at Club Vivid for me, because, um. I was apparently already feeling the effects of the open bar, even though this aired relatively early in the show. Once I got it home and watched it completely sober, this blew me away. Buffyann has a gift for motion that is just staggering. Every clip here flows seamlessly into the next clip, through both internal and external motion, so that in the end, all these people are dancing the same (incredibly varied) dance -- and half the time, they're finishing each other's moves. As far as I can tell, I'm not familiar with any of the sources she used, which makes it all blend even more seamlessly for me. This is just gorgeous.

I had no familiarity with anime music videos when I watched this for the first time, and this convinced me that I was missing out *huge* on some great stuff. It's fabulous, and funny, and wonderful, and with editing and synching that's so good I'm still not completely convinced that the characters aren't saying the narrative bits. You must* watch this. No, really.

A pick 'n' mix of superheroes. A smorgasbord of leather and lycra.
Why you should watch this
Once again, Charmax blows me away with her gift for motion and emotion. She works with a lot of different movie-source superheroes here -- Daredevil, the Incredibles, the Fantastic Four, Spider Man, Batman, Superman, the X-Men (with attendant villains, of course) -- and weaves them together into a vid about an archetypal Superhero, one that keeps on fighting to save the day no matter how bad things get. And, okay, that sounds sort of pompous, with the archetypes and the capital-s superhero, but really, this is amazing, and uplifting, heartbreaking, and moving, and I want to say "fun" because it is fun, but it's it's also all about how the life of a superhero sorta... sucks. And these people do it anyway, and wow. They really are amazing.

Andraste mixed live-action, anime, and cartoon fandoms here, which is something you don't often see, but which works here, because hey, it's all about the romance and the sweetness. Why you should watch this
So, most kitchen-sink vids don't really connect the sources -- maybe they show parallels, or similarities, or themes, but everything within each source is separate from the other sources.
This? Is a crossover.
*points up to that giant list of fandoms* It's a crossover, with lots of these characters dancing in the same club, or drowning in the same lake, or in the same infirmary, or being rained on by the same blood (I love fandom).
The pace is fast, keeping up with the beat either through quick cuts or internal motion, so there are clips I still haven't completely seen (because I don't know the source enough to fill it in on my own). That doesn't matter, though, because for me this is all about the motion and the beat. Seriously cool work here.

Why you should watch this
*glee*
I first saw this when it premiered during Club Vivid at Vividcon 2005, when it won over the entire room, in spades. The title sums up the entire vid -- this really is a fannish taxonomy of hotness, organized by theme, with each them leading seamlessly into the next (which is just so brilliantly done I can't even tell you). It has girls, and boys, and girls and boys, and girls and girls, and boys and boys. Some of the "hot" themes are what you'd expect -- shirtlessnes, nakedness, kissing, dancing -- and some will make you go "hee! yes!" because man, do we find more hot than just nakedness.
It's just wonderful -- fun and happy and sexy and managing to be a big meta statement about all of us at the same time. *loves*
